West African CFA Franc (XOF) Overview

The West African CFA franc (XOF) is the common currency of the eight member states of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA): Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Togo. It is issued by the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) and is one of two CFA franc currencies in Africa, the other being the Central African CFA franc (XAF). The XOF is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate, providing monetary stability for member countries.

Historically, the CFA franc was created in 1945 and has undergone several reforms. The currency is widely used in the region for trade and everyday transactions, and its stability is underpinned by the French Treasury guarantee. However, the currency has faced criticism for its peg to the euro, which some argue limits the monetary policy autonomy of member states. In 2019, the currency was renamed the Eco, with plans to reform the peg, but as of now, the XOF remains in circulation.

For travelers and businesses, the XOF is available in coins and banknotes, with denominations ranging from 1 to 500 francs for coins and 500 to 10,000 francs for banknotes. The currency is not freely convertible outside the region, and exchange rates are determined by the peg to the euro. It is advisable to check current exchange rates before transactions, as they can vary slightly due to market conditions.
