Special Drawing Rights (XDR) – IMF Currency Overview
The Special Drawing Right (XDR) is an international reserve asset, created by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 1969 to supplement its member countries' official reserves. Its value is based on a basket of five major currencies: the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Chinese renminbi, the Japanese yen, and the British pound sterling. The basket composition is reviewed every five years to reflect the relative importance of currencies in global trade and finance.
XDRs are not a currency, nor a claim on the IMF. Instead, they are a potential claim on the freely usable currencies of IMF members. Holders of XDRs can exchange them for these currencies through voluntary swaps or by the IMF designating members with strong external positions to purchase them. The XDR serves as the unit of account for the IMF and some other international organizations, and it also acts as a benchmark for certain financial instruments.
The value of the XDR is calculated daily from the market exchange rates of the basket currencies. Its role in the international monetary system has evolved over time, and it has been used to provide liquidity during global economic crises. However, the XDR is not intended for private or commercial transactions; it is primarily a tool for official sector use.
