Central African CFA Franc (XAF) Overview
The Central African CFA franc (XAF) is the official currency of six independent states in Central Africa: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. It is issued by the Bank of Central African States (BEAC), headquartered in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The currency is one of two CFA franc variants, the other being the West African CFA franc (XOF), and is used by over 50 million people.
The XAF has a fixed exchange rate to the euro, set at 1 euro = 655.957 XAF. This peg was established in 1999 when the euro replaced the French franc, maintaining the previous parity of 100 CFA francs to 1 French franc. The peg is guaranteed by the French Treasury, which provides convertibility and stability, but also ties the monetary policy of the member states to that of the eurozone.
The currency is subdivided into 100 centimes, although centime coins are rarely used. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10,000 francs, while coins are available in 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 500 franc denominations. The BEAC manages the money supply and oversees the stability of the currency, with a focus on maintaining low inflation and supporting economic development in the region.
