Swedish Krona (SEK): Overview and History
The Swedish Krona (SEK) has been the currency of Sweden since 1873, when it replaced the riksdaler. The name 'krona' means 'crown' in Swedish. The currency is issued by the Sveriges Riksbank, the central bank of Sweden, which is one of the oldest central banks in the world.
SEK is subdivided into 100 öre, although öre coins are no longer in circulation. Banknotes are available in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 kronor, while coins come in 1, 2, 5, and 10 kronor. The currency is widely used in Sweden and is also accepted in some neighboring regions.
