Serbian Dinar (RSD): Overview and History
The Serbian Dinar (RSD) has been the official currency of Serbia since 2003, when it replaced the Yugoslav dinar. Its history stretches back to medieval times, with the dinar first introduced in the 13th century during the reign of King Stefan Vladislav. Today, the dinar is issued by the National Bank of Serbia and is used by approximately 7 million people.
The dinar is subdivided into 100 para, although para coins are no longer in circulation. Banknotes are available in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000 dinars, while coins come in 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 dinars. The currency symbol is РСД or RSD, and its ISO code is RSD.
As a member of the Western Balkans, Serbia's economy is transitioning towards market-oriented reforms. The dinar's exchange rate is managed by the National Bank of Serbia, which aims to maintain price stability. While the euro is widely accepted in some tourist areas, the dinar remains the primary legal tender for everyday transactions.
