Angolan Kwanza (AOA): Overview and History
The Angolan kwanza (AOA) is the official currency of Angola, a country located in Southern Africa. The currency was introduced in 1977, replacing the Angolan escudo at par, following the nation's independence from Portugal in 1975. The name 'kwanza' is derived from the Kwanza River, a major waterway in Angola.
Over the years, the kwanza has experienced significant economic challenges, including hyperinflation and currency devaluations. As a result, the currency has been redenominated multiple times. The first kwanza (AOA) was introduced in 1990, followed by the second kwanza (AON) in 1995, and the third kwanza (AOR) in 1999. The current kwanza (AOA) was introduced in 2000, with one new kwanza equal to 1,000 old kwanzas.
The kwanza is issued and regulated by the National Bank of Angola (Banco Nacional de Angola), the country's central bank. The currency is subdivided into 100 cêntimos, although due to inflation, coins of lower denominations are rarely used in daily transactions. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 kwanzas.
