VEB: The Venezuelan Bolívar (Pre-2008)

The Venezuelan bolívar (VEB) was the official currency of Venezuela from 1879 until 2008. Named after Simón Bolívar, the liberator of South America, the currency underwent several changes and devaluations over its long history. In 2008, due to high inflation, the government introduced the bolívar fuerte (VEF) as a new currency, with 1,000 VEB equal to 1 VEF. This redenomination was part of a monetary reform aimed at simplifying transactions and stabilizing the economy.

Throughout its existence, the VEB experienced significant fluctuations in value, particularly in the latter decades. The currency was subject to exchange controls and multiple devaluations, which affected both domestic purchasing power and international trade. The Central Bank of Venezuela issued banknotes and coins in various denominations, with the highest banknote being 100,000 VEB before the redenomination.

Today, the VEB is obsolete and no longer in circulation. It has been replaced by subsequent currencies, including the VEF and later the bolívar soberano (VES) in 2018. For historical and numismatic purposes, the VEB remains a subject of interest, but it holds no current monetary value. This page provides factual information about the VEB for educational and reference purposes.
