Turkmenistani Manat (TMM): Overview and History
The Turkmenistani manat (TMM) is the national currency of Turkmenistan, a country in Central Asia. It was introduced in 1993, replacing the Russian ruble following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The manat is issued by the Central Bank of Turkmenistan and is subdivided into 100 tenge, although tenge coins are rarely used in practice.
The currency has undergone significant changes since its introduction. In 2009, a new manat (ISO code TMT) was introduced at a rate of 5,000 old manat to 1 new manat, but the old manat (TMM) remains a historical reference. The TMM is primarily used for domestic transactions, and its exchange rate is officially pegged to the U.S. dollar, though parallel market rates may differ.
Turkmenistan's economy is heavily reliant on natural gas and oil exports, which influence the value and stability of the manat. The government maintains strict control over currency exchange, and the manat is not freely convertible. For historical and informational purposes, the TMM remains a topic of interest for numismatists and economists studying post-Soviet transitions.
