It was introduced in July 2011, shortly after South Sudan gained independence from Sudan, replacing the Sudanese pound at a rate of 1 SSP to 1 Sudanese pound. The currency is issued and regulated by the Bank of South Sudan, the country's central bank.
The SSP is subdivided into 100 piasters, although coins are rarely used due to high inflation and economic challenges. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 pounds, with higher denominations introduced over time to cope with inflation. The currency symbol is £SS or SSP, and its ISO code is SSP.
Due to ongoing economic instability and conflict, the SSP has experienced significant depreciation and volatility.
