Slovak Koruna (SKK): Overview and History
The Slovak koruna (SKK) was the official currency of Slovakia from February 8, 1993, following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, until December 31, 2008, when Slovakia adopted the euro. The koruna was subdivided into 100 haliers (halierov). Its ISO 4217 code was SKK, and its symbol was Sk.
During its existence, the Slovak koruna underwent several changes. Initially pegged to a basket of currencies, it later moved to a managed float. In 2005, Slovakia joined the European Exchange Rate Mechanism II (ERM II), which helped stabilize the currency in preparation for euro adoption. The final exchange rate was set at 30.1260 SKK per EUR on July 8, 2008.
The koruna was issued in both coins and banknotes. Coins were available in denominations of 10, 20, and 50 haliers, and 1, 2, 5, and 10 korunas. Banknotes were issued in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 5000 korunas. The designs featured notable Slovak historical figures and landmarks, such as the composer Ján Levoslav Bella on the 500-koruna note and the Spiš Castle on the 200-koruna note.
Today, the Slovak koruna is no longer in circulation, but it remains a part of Slovakia's economic history. Collectors and numismatists may still find koruna coins and banknotes, and they can be exchanged at the National Bank of Slovakia for euros at the official rate indefinitely.
