Romanian Leu (RON): Overview and History

The Romanian Leu (RON) is the official currency of Romania, issued by the National Bank of Romania. The currency's name, 'leu', means 'lion' in Romanian, a nod to the Dutch thaler that featured a lion and was used in the region historically. The RON was introduced in 2005, replacing the previous leu (ROL) at a rate of 10,000 old lei to 1 new leu, as part of a monetary reform aimed at simplifying transactions and aligning with European Union standards.

The leu is subdivided into 100 bani. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200, and 500 lei, while coins are available in 1, 5, 10, and 50 bani, as well as 1 and 2 lei. The banknotes feature prominent Romanian historical figures, such as the poet Mihai Eminescu on the 5-leu note and the mathematician Dimitrie Leonida on the 1-leu note, along with intricate designs that incorporate Romanian cultural and natural heritage.

Romania is a member of the European Union, but it has not yet adopted the euro. The RON is managed under a floating exchange rate regime, with the National Bank of Romania intervening to maintain stability. The currency plays a vital role in the country's economy, which has seen significant growth and development since the fall of communism in 1989. As Romania continues to integrate with the EU, the leu remains a symbol of national identity and economic progress.
