Dutch Guilders (NLG): Overview and History

The Dutch guilder (NLG) served as the national currency of the Netherlands for centuries, with its origins tracing back to the 16th century. It was a symbol of Dutch economic strength and stability, particularly during the Dutch Golden Age. The guilder was subdivided into 100 cents and was issued by De Nederlandsche Bank, the central bank of the Netherlands.

Throughout its long history, the guilder underwent various changes, including decimalization in 1816 and periods of pegging to other currencies. In the 20th century, it was known for its stability and was a key currency in international trade. The guilder was also used in the Netherlands Antilles until 2010, though that territory had its own version of the currency.

On January 1, 1999, the guilder became a subunit of the euro, with a fixed exchange rate of 2.20371 guilders per euro. Euro coins and banknotes were introduced in 2002, and the guilder ceased to be legal tender on January 28, 2002. Today, the guilder is no longer in circulation, but its legacy remains in the history of European monetary integration.
