Mauritanian Ouguiya (MRU) Overview
The Mauritanian Ouguiya (MRU) is the official currency of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, a country in Northwest Africa. The currency code MRU was introduced in 2018 when Mauritania redenominated its currency, replacing the old ouguiya (MRO) at a rate of 1 new ouguiya = 10 old ouguiyas. The ouguiya is issued by the Central Bank of Mauritania (Banque Centrale de Mauritanie).
The currency is subdivided into 5 khoums, although coins in circulation are limited. Banknotes are available in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 ouguiyas, while coins are issued in 1, 5, 10, and 20 ouguiyas, as well as 1 khoum. The redenomination aimed to simplify transactions and reduce the number of zeros in everyday prices.
The MRU is primarily used within Mauritania and is not widely traded internationally.
