Lithuanian Litas (LTL): Overview and History
The Lithuanian litas (ISO code: LTL) was the official currency of Lithuania for two distinct periods in the 20th and 21st centuries. First introduced in 1922 after the country declared independence, the litas replaced the ostmark and ostruble, which had been in circulation during the German occupation in World War I. The currency was pegged to the US dollar and later to the British pound, reflecting Lithuania's economic ties with Western nations. However, the Soviet occupation in 1940 led to the replacement of the litas with the Soviet ruble, and the currency ceased to exist for over five decades.
Following the restoration of independence in 1990, Lithuania reintroduced the litas in 1993, replacing the temporary talonas. The new litas was initially pegged to the US dollar and later to the euro, as Lithuania pursued closer integration with the European Union. The currency was issued in banknotes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 litas, and coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 centų, as well as 1, 2, and 5 litas. The Bank of Lithuania was responsible for issuing and regulating the currency, ensuring its stability and convertibility.
On January 1, 2015, Lithuania adopted the euro as its official currency, permanently retiring the litas. The conversion rate was fixed at 3.45280 litas per euro, and the transition was smooth, with dual circulation allowed for two weeks. Today, the litas is no longer legal tender, but it remains a significant part of Lithuania's monetary history. Collectors and historians often study the litas for its design and the economic policies it represented.
