Kyrgyzstani Som (KGS) Overview
The Kyrgyzstani som (KGS) has been the official currency of Kyrgyzstan since May 10, 1993, when it replaced the Soviet ruble at a rate of 1 som = 200 rubles. The currency is issued by the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic, which oversees its circulation and monetary policy. The som is subdivided into 100 tyiyn, although tyiyn coins are rarely used in everyday transactions due to their low value.
Kyrgyzstan's economy is largely driven by agriculture, mining, and remittances from Kyrgyz workers abroad, particularly in Russia. The som's exchange rate is influenced by these factors, as well as by regional economic conditions and global commodity prices. The currency has experienced periods of volatility, but the National Bank has implemented measures to maintain stability, including interventions in the foreign exchange market.
For travelers and businesses, the som is available in banknotes of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 5000 som, and coins of 1, 3, 5, and 10 som. While the som is not widely traded internationally, it is freely convertible within Kyrgyzstan, and currency exchange services are available at banks and exchange offices. As with any currency, it is advisable to check current exchange rates before engaging in financial transactions.
