Iranian Rial (IRR) Overview
The Iranian Rial (IRR) is the official currency of Iran, issued and regulated by the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The currency is subdivided into 100 dinars, although dinars are no longer used in everyday transactions due to their negligible value. The rial has been the national currency since 1932, replacing the qiran at a rate of 1 rial = 1 qiran.
Over the years, the rial has faced substantial depreciation, largely due to international sanctions, inflation, and economic instability. As a result, the currency has undergone several redenomination proposals, but none have been implemented. In 2020, the Iranian parliament approved a plan to replace the rial with a new currency called the toman, but as of now, the rial remains in circulation.
The Iranian economy is heavily reliant on oil and gas exports, and the value of the rial is closely tied to global oil prices and geopolitical events. Exchange rates for the rial are often quoted in two ways: the official rate and the free-market rate, which can differ significantly. For travelers and businesses, it is important to be aware of these fluctuations and to check current rates before any transaction.
