Irish Pound (IEP): History and Overview
The Irish Pound (IEP), also known as the punt, was the official currency of the Republic of Ireland from 1927 until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro. The currency was issued by the Central Bank of Ireland and was subdivided into 100 pence. Throughout its history, the Irish Pound underwent several changes, including a period of pegging to the British pound sterling and later joining the European Exchange Rate Mechanism.
Irish coins and banknotes featured notable Irish symbols and figures, such as the harp, various animals, and prominent historical personalities. The design of the currency evolved over time, with the final series of banknotes introduced in the 1990s showcasing Irish literary and historical figures. The coins included denominations of 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, and later a £2 coin.
When Ireland adopted the euro in 2002, the Irish Pound ceased to be legal tender. The exchange rate was fixed at 1 euro = 0.787564 Irish Pounds. Today, the Irish Pound is of historical interest only, and collectors and numismatists value old coins and banknotes. For those with remaining Irish Pounds, the Central Bank of Ireland continued to exchange them for euros for a period after the transition, but this service has since ended.
