Croatian Kuna (HRK) Overview
The Croatian Kuna (HRK) served as the national currency of Croatia for nearly three decades. Introduced in 1994, it replaced the temporary Croatian dinar following the country's independence. The currency was named after the marten, a small mammal whose pelts were historically used as a medium of exchange in the region. The kuna was subdivided into 100 lipa, with coins and banknotes issued by the Croatian National Bank.
In July 2020, Croatia entered the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II), a precursor to adopting the euro. The country officially adopted the euro on January 1, 2023, at a fixed conversion rate of 7.53450 kuna per euro. During a transitional period, both currencies were accepted in Croatia, but the kuna has since been phased out as legal tender. Existing kuna banknotes and coins can still be exchanged at the Croatian National Bank indefinitely.
Today, the HRK is primarily of historical interest to collectors, travelers, and businesses dealing with legacy transactions. This page offers a factual overview of the currency's history and characteristics, without providing current exchange rates or investment guidance.
