Greek Drachma (GRD): Overview and History
The Greek drachma (GRD) was the official currency of Greece for thousands of years, with its origins dating back to ancient times. It was reintroduced in 1832 after Greek independence and remained in use until 2001, when Greece adopted the euro. The drachma was subdivided into 100 lepta.
Throughout its modern history, the drachma underwent several changes, including a period of high inflation and a major currency reform in 1954, when 1 new drachma was exchanged for 1,000 old drachmae. The Bank of Greece issued banknotes and coins, with denominations ranging from 1 to 10,000 drachmae.
