French Franc (FRF) Overview

The French Franc (FRF) served as France's official currency from 1795 until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro (EUR). During its long history, the franc underwent several reforms and redenominations, including the introduction of the 'nouveau franc' in 1960, which equaled 100 old francs. The currency was issued by the Banque de France and was subdivided into 100 centimes.

As a legacy currency, the French Franc is no longer in circulation and cannot be used for transactions. However, it retains historical and numismatic value. The exchange rate between the franc and the euro was fixed at 6.55957 FRF per EUR when the euro was introduced, and this rate remains relevant for converting old franc amounts into euros for historical or accounting purposes.

Today, the French Franc is primarily of interest to collectors, historians, and those dealing with pre-euro financial records. It serves as a reminder of France's economic past and the transition to a unified European currency. For current financial transactions, the euro is the sole legal tender in France.
