Finnish Markka (FIM): History and Legacy
The Finnish markka (FIM) was the official currency of Finland from 1860 until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro. Introduced by the Bank of Finland, the markka was subdivided into 100 pennies. Over its long history, the markka underwent several reforms and devaluations, reflecting Finland's economic development and periods of crisis.
Throughout its existence, the markka featured notable designs, including portraits of Finnish cultural figures and national symbols. The final series of markka banknotes, introduced in the 1980s, showcased architect Alvar Aalto, composer Jean Sibelius, and other prominent Finns. Coins ranged from 1 penny to 100 markka, with the last coins minted in 2001.
Finland joined the European Economic and Monetary Union in 1999, and the euro was introduced as book money, with markka coins and notes circulating until the transition was completed in 2002. Today, the markka is a historical currency, but its legacy remains in Finnish numismatics and national memory.
