Spanish Peseta (ESP): Overview and History
The Spanish Peseta (ESP) served as Spain's national currency for over 130 years, from its introduction in 1869 until the country adopted the euro in 2002. During its long history, the peseta witnessed significant economic and political changes, including the Spanish Civil War, the transition to democracy, and Spain's integration into the European Union. The currency was subdivided into 100 céntimos, although coins of céntimos were rarely used in later years.
Throughout its existence, the peseta underwent various reforms and devaluations, reflecting Spain's economic challenges and growth. The Bank of Spain issued banknotes and coins featuring notable Spanish figures, historical events, and cultural symbols. The peseta was also used in Spain's former colonies and territories, such as Equatorial Guinea and Western Sahara, before they gained independence or adopted other currencies.
In 1999, Spain became a founding member of the eurozone, and the peseta was pegged to the euro at a fixed rate of 166.386 pesetas per euro. Euro coins and banknotes were introduced in 2002, and the peseta was completely withdrawn from circulation by March 2002. Today, the peseta is no longer legal tender, but it remains a nostalgic reminder of Spain's economic past and is often collected by numismatists.
