Estonian Kroon (EEK): Overview and History
The Estonian kroon (EEK) was the national currency of Estonia from June 20, 1992, until January 14, 2011, when it was officially replaced by the euro. The kroon was introduced after Estonia regained independence from the Soviet Union, replacing the Soviet ruble. Its name, 'kroon,' is derived from the Swedish 'krona,' reflecting historical ties with Scandinavia.
The kroon was subdivided into 100 senti. Banknotes were issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 500 krooni, while coins were minted in 5, 10, 20, and 50 senti, as well as 1, 2, and 5 krooni. The currency was pegged to the Deutsche Mark from 1992 to 1999, and then to the euro at a fixed rate of 15.6466 krooni per euro, a rate that remained until the adoption of the euro.
Estonia's transition to the euro was a significant milestone in its integration with the European Union. The euro replaced the kroon at the fixed exchange rate, and both currencies circulated in parallel for two weeks. Today, the kroon is no longer legal tender, but it remains a symbol of Estonia's post-Soviet economic development and its successful path toward European integration.
