German Mark (DEM): History and Legacy
The German Mark, abbreviated as DEM, was introduced in 1948 in West Germany as a stable currency to replace the Reichsmark. It quickly became a symbol of economic recovery and stability, playing a crucial role in the post-war 'Wirtschaftswunder' (economic miracle). The currency was issued by the Deutsche Bundesbank, which maintained a strong anti-inflationary policy, earning the Mark international trust.
Following German reunification in 1990, the Mark became the currency of the entire country. It remained a strong and stable currency, often used as a reserve currency. The Mark's stability was a cornerstone of European monetary cooperation, leading to its participation in the European Exchange Rate Mechanism and eventually the Economic and Monetary Union.
In 2002, the German Mark was replaced by the euro (EUR) at a fixed exchange rate of 1.95583 DEM per euro. Although no longer in circulation, the Mark remains a nostalgic symbol of German economic strength and is still exchangeable at the Bundesbank for euros indefinitely.
