Angolan New Kwanza (AON): Overview and History
The Angolan New Kwanza (AON) was introduced in 1990 as part of a currency reform in Angola, replacing the first Kwanza at a rate of 1 new kwanza = 1,000 old kwanzas. The currency was issued by the National Bank of Angola and was subdivided into 100 lwei. However, due to high inflation and economic instability, the AON was short-lived.
In 1995, the Angolan New Kwanza was replaced by the Kwanza reajustado (AOR) at a rate of 1 reajustado = 1,000 new kwanzas. This change was part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the Angolan economy. The AON is now obsolete, and any remaining notes or coins are of interest primarily to collectors.
